1975:Environmen­tal Minister of Health and

Control Kenneth McNeill, in officially opening the seventh Caribbean Health Ministers Conference at The Pegasus hotel, reviews “not only the important achievemen­ts that are a direct consequenc­e of previous conference­s but the philosophi­es and objectives of the Caribbean Community”. In regard to Jamaica, McNeill mentions the implementa­tion of a national nutrition programme; the provision of J$2.3 million for setting up community health centres, and the establishm­ent of an environmen­tal protection advisory council.

1998:Jamaica, Bank of Now Scotia

the island’s leading bank, unveils its latest attempt to expand its growing financial services operation with the launch of a new life insurance product. A long-term tax-free savings plan combined with life insurance needs and high returns – that’s what Scotia Jamaica Life Insurance Company offers with its flagship product, ScotiaMint. The move “should not be viewed as entering life insurance per se but more like providing another opportunit­y for long-term secured investment/savings”, according to the bank’s Managing Director William Clarke. Clarke added, “Our decision to enter the life insurance market is made to allow us to compete in the tax-advantaged, longer-term savings and securities market in Jamaica. “
