WITH 16 students securing placements to the schools of their first choice, including seven who were placed at traditional high schools, Principal Dian Vidal Briggs is boasting about her charges at Mount Pleasant Primary in Portland.

Briggs, who spoke to The Gleaner, explained that the rigorous study sessions that the students had to undergo has paid off, as not only have they done exceptionally well in the recently concluded Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT), but also that their average in mathematics exceeded the national average.

“The hard work has paid off. Our average in mathematics is above 70.6 per cent,” said Briggs.

“We have a situation where two female students, Jaedakaye Brown and Christina Cooper, were tied in terms of their average. They are the top female performers this year. Our top male performer is Oshane Johnson. They all had to endure many challenges, including having to attend school one hour early each day for extra lessons,” she added.

According to Briggs, the commitment shown by members of staff, who volunteered their time to assist with the growth and development of the students, is second to none. She noted that mathematics coordinators Wendy Forbes and Winsome Campbell worked tirelessly, along with other teachers, who ensured that all 22 students were placed at high schools in the parish.

Top male student, Oshane Johnson, who will attend Titchfield High in September, said his ambition is to become an immigration officer.

Jaedakaye Brown said her ambition is to become a doctor, as she is passionate about helping sick people. Brown will also attend Titchfield come September

And Christina Cooper, who will also attend Titchfield, said she plans is to become a journalist.
