Immaculate drops to number 17 in 2018 high school ranking
IMMACULATE CONCEPTION High has dropped from being the second-highest ranked secondary education institution last year to number 17 this year according to rankings compiled by local think tank Educate Jamaica.
According to the report, 90.7 per cent of Immaculate’s cohort obtained five or more subjects, including mathematics and/or English in the 2017 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations, while 81.7 per cent of students obtained five or more subjects, including mathematics and English.
“What we have done at Educate Jamaica is to look at each school and calculate the percentage of students at the end of grade 11 (fifth form) achieving a minimum of five CSEC subjects (including mathematics and/or English). Based on the percentage obtained, they are ranked,” Ainsworth Darby, president of Educate Jamaica, explained yesterday.
He added, “The ranking takes into account the students who would have obtained their subject(s) prior to grade 11.”
ST HUGH’S STEPS UP
The Gleaner reached out to principal of Immaculate Conception Sister Angella Harris for comment. However, she was said to be in a meeting and handling graduation and Grade Six Achievement Test affairs.
Westwood High also commanded attention as it dropped from number four to 18, but calls to the school went unanswered.
Conversely, St Hugh’s High School stepped up from 25 to number 10. Campion College maintained the top position, followed by St Andrew’s High School for Girls, Hampton School, Knox College, and Mount Alvernia High. Wolmer’s Boys’ School was the bestplaced boys’ school at number nine.
