THE SOCIAL Development Commission’s (SDC) National Twenty20 Community Cricket Competition takes place from April to August and is being executed under the theme ‘Building communities ... Building Jamaica.’

Organisers said that the competition is aimed at fostering youth inclusion and enhancing positive attitudes towards national development.

The Social Development Commission believes that through sports, cricket in particular, they will be able to increase youth inclusion and community participation while raising awareness about the role of community organisations in the economic development of Jamaica.

The competition involves two-thirds of the 775 communities in Jamaica and is in its 12th season.

CASH PRIZES

The national champions will receive a cash prize of $1.2 million dollars, while the national runner up walks away with $600,000, the third-place team collects $300,000, and fourth grabs $150,000.

Before progressing to the national finals, teams have to first qualify through their respective parishes.

At that level, first place wins a cash prize of $100,000, with second place nabbing $50,000 and third -place getting $25,000.

Organisers said that the competition seeks to promote positive family values in an entertaining atmosphere as well as to increase the organisational capacities of local communities.

The commission said it aims to achieve this is through a rule stipulating that all winning cricket teams must channel 15 per cent of their prize money into a major project that will address a need identified in their communities.
