Wheatley’s all about profiling
THE EDITOR, Sir:
SEVERAL OF my colleagues and I are not surprised by the revelations in the ongoing Petrojam saga.
Shortly after his appointment in 2016, Minister Andrew Wheatley visited my workplace, eGov Jamaica, to speak with the staff. The minister emphasised a number of times that we should not call him regarding any problems at the entity. He said any issues we are having, we should take to our supervisors. If they have not been addressed sufficiently, we should take them to the directors, CEO, etc., but, he stressed, don’t call him.
He said there was only one time we should call him: when there is a ribbon to cut. This he repeated a number of times. Even if he was joking, it was certainly not received as such. I still have a copy of that tape.
This makes it no surprise that he is clueless about what is happening at Petrojam. Indeed, if he had given them the same instructions, he would rightly be in the dark.
The minister seems to not care enough about the portfolio and is just in the post for profiling. When he opened the Dr Andrew Wheatley Centre for Digital Innovation and Advanced Manufacturing at the Caribbean Maritime University in 2017, it was a clear indication of where his priorities lay. We had never seen a minister name an institution after himself while in office in such a vulgar manner.
Wheatley certainly had it coming. Too bad this one doesn’t have a ribbon on it.
NOT SURPRISED
