Legal luminaries to be honoured at JamBar dinner
IN WHAT has been dubbed a glitzy affair, the Jamaican Bar Association (JamBar) will host its annual banquet at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel, New Kingston, on July 13. Chief among the highlights of this year’s staging will be the association’s recognition and celebration of three of Jamaica’s leading legal luminaries for their contribution to the community.
Jamaica’s first female chief justice Zaila McCalla, former minister of justice and Jamaica’s first female attorney general Dorothy Lightbourne, and senior opposition senator and attorney-at-law K.D. Knight will be the toast of the evening’s proceedings.
They were selected for their exceptional contributions to the advancement of law and the legal profession.
According to Melissa McLeod, chairperson for the social outreach sub-committee of JamBar, the contributions of the awardees are remarkable, and the association is delighted to be able to recognise them for their outstanding dedication to the people of Jamaica.
“From published reports, submissions, and books to legislative law reform and, particularly, the delivery of legal services to members of the society, these lawyers are deserving of the recognition they will receive,” she said.
Each recipient will receive a citation at the event that will see performances from Jamaican reggae soul singer Mario Evon. Former president of JamBar, Ian Wilkinson, will co-host the evening’s proceedings along with Rochelle Cameron.
For what promises to be a one-of-akind staging in Jamaica, pre-sold tickets cost $12,500 and will include cocktails at 6:30 p.m. and a four-course dinner starting at 7 p.m.
