5 questions with ... ROMEICH MAJOR

-

THIS WEEK’S Five Questions With features one of the most dynamic men to have come on the music scene in recent times. He’s literally a jack of all trades, doing everything from artiste management to designing. He’s the man behind the careers of artistes such as Shenseea and Ding Dong. He is Romeich Major. Major has managed to establish a good relationship not just with persons inside the music industry, but also with corporate Jamaica, which has led to his clients (many of them dancehall artistes) becoming ambassadors for these companies. He’s said to have the Midas touch, and this week we learn more about the man making these big moves.

Your current work is in the entertainment industry. Is it what you always wanted to do as a career?

I do quite a few things in the entertainment industry. I am an artiste manager, producer, designer and entrepreneur. Growing up, my dream was to be involved in music in some way, as music was my first love. As a child, I was obsessed with everything music and even recorded Irie FM on cassettes, making sure to remember the ad at 7:15 p.m. so I could pause the recording. I also always dreamt of touring with a superstar, and I currently have many superstars on my team that I’m touring with. So, everything I’m doing now is me living my dream.

What are some of the changes you've seen in the music industry since you started working with artistes?

Since I’ve started working with artistes, all I’ve seen is a decline in many different aspects of the industry, especially in regard to unity. I’ve never seen it at this level, and even before I worked with artistes I was in the industry. Back in the day there was also separation, but only two or three different groups. Nowadays, the industry is split in 10. Another problem I see in the industry is the politics associated with music, I won’t go in-depth, but we all know and see it.

What's the one thing you love most about Jamaica, and why?

The thing I love the most about Jamaica is that even though we are a small island, our impact and popularity is so massive. When it comes to talent, we stand firm as one of the most powerful countries to produce talent, whether in music or sports or cuisine; anything at all.

What's one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

A lot of people see me and because I might have a stern look on my face, they immediately think that I’m miserable or unapproachable. However, I am one of the most jovial persons ever. The ladies say I’m like a big teddy bear. If you could do any other job outside of music for a week, what would it be? Seeing that I have multiple businesses, I would and actually do take a break from music sometimes and focus solely on the designer hat that I wear.
