MATTEA ISSA is one for the future in local golf. The 11-year-old student at the Hopefield Preparatory School in Kingston is the youngest member of the Jamaican team that competed at the justconcluded Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championships. The tournament was held at the Caymanas Golf Club.

Mattea, the daughter of Christopher and Kimberly Issa, had many good words to say about the tournament.

“Well it is an amazing experience being on the team. As the youngest member of the team I feel like not a lot of people get this chance, so my aim is to bring home some points for my team,” she said.

Issa, who wants to attend Campion College after leaving prep school, also spoke about what inspired her to play golf rather than other sports.

BROTHER AN INSPIRATION

“Well, my brother actually started golf with my coach, and he wasn’t very good, and so I decided to tag along, and I picked up his club and selected a range ball and I hit it,” she said.

Issa now has a deep love for golf and has a strong desire to play the game professionally.

“Because of how much I love golf I just feel like if I play it professionally, then I can be an inspiration to a lot of people and a lot of juniors like me,” she said.

Issa, who carded a 98 on Wednesday’s opening day of the tournament, has been playing golf for four years.

“To do well and bring home some points for the team is my aim for this tournament,” Issa told The Gleaner on Thursday.
