Legal legends Zaila, KD, Dorothy saluted by Bar Association
THE LAST time they were seen face to face in public was during the bruising Manat Enquiry back in 2011, with the two gladiators going at each other against the background of an allegation of ‘chair kicking’ many years earlier.
But last Friday, K.D. Knight and Dorothy Lightbourne, two veteran Queen’s Counsel, stood side by side under more pleasant circumstances, with former Chief Justice Zaila McCalla as they were honoured by the Jamaican Bar Association at its annual banquet held at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston.
PRAISED FOR WORK
Supported by family and members of the political and legal fraternity, the three luminaries basked in the glitz and glamour of the evening as they were praised for their sterling contribution to the profession.
McCalla was called to the Bar in 1976, practised as a prosecutor before serving the judiciary to eventually become Jamaica’s first female chief justice.
Knight was called to the Bar in 1973 and has practised at the criminal bar for decades, between serving as a Cabinet minister.
Lightbourne was called to the Bar in 1970 and was a long-serving member of the Senate before she became the first female attorney general of Jamaica.
As the three were saluted for their work. McCalla’s citation was read by Michael Hylton, Knight’s citation was read by his partner Bert Samuels, while Lightbourne’s citation was read by Jacqueline Samuels-Brown.
