Gordon expects Swaby to boost Humble Lion
HUMBLE LION head coach Merron Gordon said the return of striker Francois Swaby is a major boost for his team ahead the upcoming Red Stripe Premier League season.
The 29-year-old Swaby spent last season on loan with El Salvador league club Luis Ángel Firpo.
Gordon told The Gleaner that Swaby has proven himself to be one of the best strikers in the nation’s top-flight competition over the years, so he is looking forward to working with him.
“Before he left, he was our leading striker in terms of the amount of goals scored,” said Gordon.
“I think he provides a lot of leadership qualities up front, and I think we lost that last season, and it cost us dearly, and with him coming back with Craig Foster in the team, this can be very dangerous for our opponents this season,” said Gordon, who has worked extensively with the striker in the past.
“I am feeling very good about his return because I coached him at Sporting Central, so we have a good relationship,” Gordon said.
“I have known him since he was going to Spaulding High School, and he is a player that really looked up to me, and I have a lot of respect for him,” he said.
The Clarendon-based Humble Lion missed out on a spot in the play-offs by four points last season, but Gordon said he is expecting his team to do much better in the upcoming campaign.
“We are trying to push a mixture of youth and experience because over the years, Humble Lion always used a lot of experienced players, but we are going to blend that now with the youths,” Gordon said.
“Our aim is to finish in the top two, and this will be our focus going into this season’s competition,”he said.
