BOYS’ TOWN recorded a stunning 3-0 victory over last year’s champions, Cavalier, to win the 2018 Alliance MoneyGram/KSAFA Under-17 title at the Excelsior High School yesterday.

Boys’ Town, who were securing their second hold on the title, were led to victory by two-goal hero Omar Reid, who scored in the 24th and 61st minutes. Donald Walters scored the opening goal in the eighth minute.

Leon Hardware, coach of Boys’ Town, said that he was very surprised by his team’s margin of victory.

“I wasn’t expecting such a big win because we went into the game as the underdogs, and so I am very pleased with this victory,” said Hardware. “I am very happy with the performance of my team because we have not been training together from the quarterfinals, and so our display was very good,” he added.

POOR DECISION

Rudolph Speid, coach of Cavalier, said poor decisionmaking by his players cost them the game.

“I think it was mainly indiscipline that cost us the game, but I have to give credit to Boys’ Town because they came and they stuck to the task,” said Speid.

“We definitely have a problem with set plays because in the semifinals, we conceded two set-play goals, and we came and conceded to set plays in this final,” he said.

Boys’ Town went ahead when Cavalier’s custodian misjudged a Donald Walters shot, which went through his hands and into the back of the net.

Reid then doubled Boys’ Town lead when he pounced on a loose ball inside the 18-yards box to fire home.

Dwayne Atkinson should have reduced the deficit for Cavalier before halftime, but he failed to convert from the penalty spot.

Reid returned to wrap up the victory for Boys’ Town in the second half with a powerful left-footed shot that went like a rocket past the Cavalier goalkeeper.
