1984 :Alpart Production at the

plant in Nain, St Elizabeth, is expected to get back to normal within two months following the reopening of the plant, which had been closed since the end of May by a strike of hourly-paid workers. A spokesman for the company told The Gleaner that while he could not give the exact times, operations should resume in a very short period because the plant was in “pretty good shape” when it was closed down, and it should be back to normal within the next one to two months. Alpart’s management closed down the plant on May 30 after the National Workers Union, which represents the workers, served a 72-hour strike ultimatum on the company.

Michael Manley, presi1988:dent

of the People’s National Party (PNP), is now in Washington, D.C.,having discussion­s with advisers to the Democratic and Republican presidenti­al candidates there. A PNP news release says that Manley is expected to meet with advisers to Michael Dukakis, the Democratic nominee, and George Bush, the Republican nominee. Manley will also have talks with advisers to Jesse Jackson. Talks will also be held with several US Congressme­n, including Charles Rangel, William Crocket and Walter Fauntroy. Manley will also be seeing members of the Senate Appropriat­ions Committee and US investors who have indicated their interest in developing business relationsh­ips with Jamaica.
