Confident Richards targeting more regional success
O’DAYNE RICHARDS pulled off a gutsy second throw of 21.02 metres to win the men’s shot put final at the recently concluded Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) in Barranquilla, Colombia, after his teammate Ashinia Miller took the early lead. The victory provided a confidencebooster for the national record holder, who had struggled to find form earlier this season.
Richards will be looking use the gained confidence when he contests the men’s shot put final tonight at 6:50 p.m. as he and Miller look to kick off Jamaica’s medal count at the 2018 NACAC Senior Championships in Toronto, Canada.
Before Richards and Miller spin in the ring, though, Tyquendo Tracey and Kenroy Anderson will be the first Jamaicans in action today, when they contest the preliminary round of the men’s 100m at 10:25 a.m. Tracey will be using the opportunity to confirm his status as a sub-10 seconds sprinter, after achieving the feat twice this season.
Stephenie-Ann McPherson and Christine Day will contest the women’s 400m semi-final at 10: 50 a.m.
The men’s equivalent will follow 20 minutes later with Fitzroy Dunkley and Demish Gaye.
Fresh off his Central American and Caribbean Games title win last week, Ramone Bailey will be looking to continue his winning ways when he takes part in the qualification round of the men’s long jump at 11:15 a.m, while Jahnoy Thompson and Nigel Ellis will wrap up the morning session with the preliminary round of the men’s 200m.
EVENING SESSION
In the evening session, Janieve Russell and Leah Nugent will face the starter for the women’s 400m hurdles semi-final at 6:30 p.m. while Annsert Whyte, who announced his return from injury with a silver medal at the CAC Games, and Shawn Rowe, will run their men semi-final at 6:45 p.m.
National record holder Natoya Goule and Simoya Campbell will go at 7:10 p.m. for the semi-final for the women’s 800m. At 8:10 p.m, former world champion Danielle Williams and Yanique Thompson will run for a spot in the 100m hurdles final, scheduled for tomorrow at 4:55 p.m. Their male counterpart, Hansle Parchment, will contest the men’s 110m hurdles semi-final at 8:25 p.m. The semifinals for the women’s and men’s 200m are also scheduled to be contested tonight at 8:40 and 9:00 p.m., respectively.
