Tryall Fund hands out $18m in scholarships

SOME 128 students from Hanover can now head into the new school year with some degree of financial security, thanks to the $18 million in scholarship funds that they recently received, courtesy of the Tryall Fund, which is committed to assisting needy youngsters to further their education.
The Tryall Fund, which has been awarding scholarships to disadvantaged students from across the western parish for the past nine years, received 166 applications this year and approved 128.
At the scholarship awards presentation ceremony, which was held in the Tryall Club Great House recently, Paula Kovinsky, president of the fund, congratulated the awardees. She also encouraged them to always aim high and to use their abilities to the fullest.
“Try to take advantage of the opportunities that come your way, find your passion, and follow that passion. Follow the things that fuel you from inside rather than the external stimuli, and give it everything that you have, give it your time and give it your skill,” said Kovinsky.
Aram Zerunian, managing director of the Tryall Club, said this year was very special, as it was the first time that the Tryall Fund was awarding so many scholarships at one time.
70 PER CENT INCREASE
“In total, 128 scholarships will be given out today, which represents a 70 per cent increase over last year,” said Zerunian, who also encouraged the students to strive for excellence.
“To build you is to build the future of our nation, and with the aid of this scholarship award to you today, you need to remain focus and become the cornerstone in a better Jamaica.”
Principal of the Montego Bay Community College, Dr Maureen Nelson, told The Gleaner that she was grateful for the level of assistance that the students were getting, as it stands to enhance the educational development in the country.
“This kind of support for the students is just phenomenal, and I totally support the foundation because they have made many parents proud of the achievements of their wards, their children, because they alone could not have afforded it, and this allows them (the children) to complete their education,“said Nelson.
