An appeal for do1983:nations

to assist with the work of the National Committee for the Inter-American Year of the Family, and for public awareness of its role and objectives, is made by Princess Lawes, parliament­ary secretary for youth and community developmen­t, and chairman of the committee. At a press conference at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel, New Kingston, Lawes says that because of budgetary constraint­s, the committee will need $600,000 to help with its work which, she says, will continue into 1984, until research is completed and recommenda­tions made to the Government. Lawes, who also seeks to attract public awareness to the role and objectives of the committe, says that its work is “a positive step in the right direction” and will not only assist in building strong families, “but a strong and stable nation” as well. 1983:force Members of the police

begin returning to work, ending their six-day sickout, on the instructio­n of the central Executive of the Police Federation after the executive had a meeting with Hugh Shearer, deputy prime minister, in his acting capacity as minister of national security and justice, and with the Commission­er of Police, Joseph Williams. A “new twist enters the proceeding­s, arising from the meetin”, Federation Chairman Sergeant D. Ricardo Buchanan, tells The Gleaner. As a result of the “new twist”, he says, “we are going to propose something” to the full meeting of the federation at 2 p.m. on August 17, at the federation headquarte­rs on East Street, Kingston. A similar emergency meeting of the Federation on Thursday, August 11, had voted to take “immediate positive action” in support of wage and fringe benefits demands on the Government.
