7 health benefits of baking soda

- Latara.boodie@gleanerjm.com

BAKING SODA is an age-old staple in many households worldwide. The vital white powder, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is typically used in baking. When it is mixed with acid (such as milk) it creates carbon dioxide – which causes the mixture to expand before it’s replaced with air. This is crucial in creating the fluffy cakes and breads that we love so much. Aside from baking, baking soda is seen as an essential ingredient to have in your medicine cabinet because of its many health benefits. Check out these seven uses of baking soda.

1. WHITENS TEETH

Studies have found that toothpaste containing baking soda is better for whitening teeth and removing plaque than toothpaste without baking soda. This is because baking soda has mild abrasive properties that let it break the bonds of the molecules that stain the teeth. It also has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that can help fight harmful bacteria.

2. DEODORANT

Initially, human sweat is odourless. It is only after being exposed to bacteria that it begins to smell because bacteria converts the sweat into acidic waste. Baking soda eliminates the smell by making the toxins less acidic due to its alkaline properties.

3. RELIEVES SUNBURN AND ITCHY SKIN

Baking soda baths can help soothe itchy skin after insect bites or bee stings. Baking soda also helps with soothing sunburns. To make a baking soda bath, add 1-2 cups of baking soda to a lukewarm bath. Make sure the affected area is soaked thoroughly. For more specific areas, you can create a paste with baking soda and a bit of water. Apply a thick layer of paste to the affected area.

4. HEARTBURN

Heartburn is a painful burning sensation that starts from the upper part of the stomach and travels up to the throat. It is caused by acid refluxing out of the stomach and up your oesophagus – the tube that connects your stomach to your mouth. Some causes of acid reflux are overeating, stress, and eating greasy or spicy foods. Baking soda can help treat heartburn by neutralising stomach acid. Dissolve a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of cold water and drink the mixture slowly.

5. MOUTHWASH

Baking soda can be used as a replacement for mouthwash. It can help freshen your breath and it provides antibacterial and antimicrobial properties.

6. SPLINTER REMOVAL

Add a tablespoon of baking soda to a small glass of water, then soak the affected area twice a day. Many splinters will come out on their own after a couple of days using this treatment.

7. GREAT FOR EXFOLIATION

Three tablespoons of baking soda to a tub of warm water for an invigorating foot soak. You can scrub your feet with a baking soda paste for additional exfoliation. A paste made from three parts of baking soda combined with one part water can be used as an exfoliator for your face and body, too. It’s natural, inexpensive and gentle enough to use every day.
