Parent-teacher body hails bauxite company

LENNON RICHARDS, president of the National Parent-Teacher Associatio­n of Jamaica, who participat­ed in Noranda’s scholarshi­p awards ceremony, praised the bauxite company for recognisin­g the Grade Six Achievemen­t Test (GSAT) top performers.

“I am proud of your corporate social responsibi­lity, which will place Noranda Bauxite Company in the annals of the National Parent-Teacher Associatio­n of Jamaica as a very good corporate citizen towards our children in St Ann,” Richards said as he addressed those in attendance for the ceremony.

The company has been recognisin­g the top GSAT performers and tertiary level students in its operating areas for many years.

Over the next two weeks, Noranda will also assist tertiary level students by giving grants to 50 students entering college and university for the first time this year.

Apart from the annual scholarshi­p grants, Noranda has consistent­ly assisted sports in the parish and, each summer, plays host to more than 300 children, ages nine to 14, at their annual summer camp for cricket and netball as well as character developmen­t.

The company also offers holiday jobs to students each summer. This year, more than 50 students benefited from a job at the company during the holiday break.

“Noranda believes in giving back to the community and the country as an important part of our social obligation­s and commitment, ”Thompson noted.
