Shearer, is made an honorary member of the 369th Veterans Associatio­n Inc. of New York at a Veterans’ Day luncheon held at Runaway Bay Hotel. Shearer officially becomes an honorary member of the associatio­n when he receives the cap of membership from the president of the associatio­n, William DeFossett. 1970:Mental The first Caribbean

Retardatio­n Conference is declared open by Minister of Education Edwin Allen in a ceremony held in the PreClinica­l Department of the University of the West Indies. The conference is organised by the Jamaica Associatio­n for Mentally Handicappe­d Children and sponsored by the President’s Committee on Mental Retardatio­n, USA. 1984:Grace Kennedy and Company Limited acquires the 30-year-old HiLo Supermarke­t business in Jamaica from Neal and Massy Investment­s Limited, which has its headquarte­rs in Trinidad, by purchasing its share capital of $270,000 for $200,000, plus HiLo’s assets; the building at Cross Roads equipment; and stockin-trade. In turn, Grace will pay off HiLo’s debts, which could amount to between $4 million and $5 million. The present HiLo complex includes the first HiLo store in Jamaica Cross Roads, as well as stores at Tropical Plaza, Liguanea Plaza, Manor Park Plaza and Mandeville, which are in premises not owned by HiLo. Gleaner that the stores had been operating at a loss over the past couple of years and that this condition led to its decision to dispose of the holdings.
