THIS DAY IN OUR PAST
The following events took place on September 11 in the years identified:
1982:Association The Jamaica Teachers’
(JTA) writes to Minister of Education Mavis Gilmour expressing “deep concern” about the manner in which the new Jamaica Agricultural College, which is to replace the Jamaica School of Agriculture, is being established with reference to two matters. These are (1) what the association terms salary and other monetary provisions for staff, and related matters, (2) procedures for the appointment of staff. According to the JTA, the principle of parity of salary for teachers in public educational institutions is being breached by the offer of higher salaries to lecturers and senior lecturers at the Jamaica Agricultural College than that paid to teachers occupying similar posts in other government tertiary institutions.
The guild of under 1986 :graduates
of the university of the West Indies (UWI) challenges the legality of the university attempting to collect or receive tuition cess imposed by the Government on UWI students. The guild in a news release, says: it writes a letter to the acting vicechancellor, Professor Leslie Robinson, pointing out that the UWI charter gives the University the exclusive right to fix and collect all fees. It says the tuition cess is not a fee determined by the University, but a tax imposed by the Government on students. “The university, therefore, should carefully consider whether collection of such tax on behalf of the Government does not represent a contravention of the charter and statutes of the UWI as a regional institution,” the Guild says.
1990:Effective Saturday, September 15, consumers will pay 30 per cent more for water and sewer rates, Public Utilities and Transport Minister Robert Pickersgill announces.
