St Jago taking it a game at a time
ST JAGO High School remains one of the unbeaten schools in the ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup competition, and coach Davion Ferguson says his team's outstanding performance is down to their game-by-game approach.
The Spanish Town-based school ended the first half of the first round with four wins and a draw from five matches, and despite many touting them as a possible contender for the title, Ferguson is not getting carried away, but says he will continue to manage his team by focusing on each game as it comes and see where it takes them.
St Jago play Greater Portmore in their return Group D game at Greater Portmore, and Ferguson's aim is to win and create more ground between the other contenders.
"We are not thinking about the second half (first round). We are thinking about Greater Portmore (today). That is going to be a big challenge. We are top of the table and want to continue to win and we play them at home. But whoever is behind us, we hope we can get a bit more breathing space between us, so we want to put in a very good performance," he said.
MOTIVATION
He revealed that their unbeaten start has been a source of motivation and they intend to keep that unbeaten run for as long as possible.
"In the first round we remained unbeaten. We started out with one of the toughest teams in Denham Town, and all things were not in place but we drew, but every game from that we have won and improved. We take it game by game as it's a young team, balanced with experienced players. We use the experienced ones to get the young guys settled and keep their feet on the ground, because schoolboys can be inconsistent so we manage them game by game.
"But we have ambitions like all the teams and what we want to focus on is playing game by, game. We are improving game by game and it's a good sign that you are going in the right direction when every game you step up a notch, so I am not please with where we are now but pleased with the direction in which we are heading. We are unbeaten and we are going to try and see how long we can keep this unbeaten run going," he said.
