1967:Sir A twice-lifesize bust of
Alexander Bustamante done by sculptor Alvin Marriott is loaded aboard the S/S
Camilo for a trip to England where it will be done in bronze. The bust was commissioned by the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union and is to be erected at its headquarters on Duke St. when it returns, perhaps by the end of April. Marriott worked in plaster for two months, he says. Casting will be done by the Morris Singer Co Ltd of London. The Camilo sails from Newport West on October 3 for the outports and will sail from Port Antonio on Thursday, October 5, for the UK. 1967:trade Prospects for increased
between Jamaica and Ireland are discussed by Michael Killeen, general manager of the Irish Export Board, who visited the island in connection with the opening of an office of the board in Kingston. Killeen speaks at a news conference at the Sheraton-Kingston Hotel and at a luncheon meeting with Jamaican Exporters’ Association at the Courtleigh Manor Hotel. He is accompanied on both occasions by Jonathan Pim, who has been appointed manager of the Kingston office. Trade between Jamaica and Ireland – is at present in Jamaica’s favour. In 1967, Jamaica sold nearly £500.000 worth of exports to Ireland mostly sugar, bananas, rum and tropical fruits. 1980:upcoming The voters’ list for the
general election is now being printed and will have a total of 974,000 eligible voters, Leader of the House of Representatives Seymour Mullings tells the House. He says the printing started on Monday, September 29. Mullings is the minister of Government with responsibility for electoral matters, and is giving the latest progress report from the director of elections on the preparations for elections.
