It’s time for Smokescreen

- Elton Tucker/Assistant Editor – Sports

AHEAD OF his first ride in public last Saturday, apprentice Tevin Foster was being hailed as the best of the new batch and he has already rewarded his fan club with three winners in two race days.

He can make it four in three when he rides the well handicapped SMOKESCREEN in tomorrow’s opening race of the Sunrise-Six. The David Lee Sin owned, trained and bred five-year-old came home with a rattle at the long odds of 69-1 on September 8 beaten into third by just over three lengths. KUNAMA, who was second to winner CUE THREE in that event, renews rivalry with the selection but he is 13lbs worst off at the handicaps and even with a change of rider to the experienced Wesley Henry is too heavy to be a factor in tomorrow’s race.

SMOKESCREEN went 36.4 in a 600 metres run at exercise on Tuesday and is now very sharp. That September 8 race was over 1300 metres and he will be seen at his best over tomorrow’s 1400 metres trip.

Race Two for three -year-old maidens over 1200 metres is tailored for CERASINI. Tensang Chung’s filly clocked a good 1:28.4 for 1400m in placing second to LALA DIVA on September 1 and prior to that, on June 16, closed fast for second in a 1000 metres straight race won by QUANTUM DANCER. Two of her rivals, SO SMOOTH and POLLY FLYER, were behind her in the September 1 run while newcomer EYE CANDY, based on her exercise reports is not yet ready for a winning run.

The improved MISS FORMALITY is a cinch in Race Three over 1300 metres. Trained by Wayne DaCosta, MISS FORMALITY won easily going 1200 metres on September 22 and runner-up APOLLO BAY franked the form with a good win on Wednesday over tomorrow’s distance, clocking 1:20.2. The filly impressed at exercise on September 30 with a 1:00.3 for 1000 metres warm-up and is definitely the one to beat.

Race Four is over 800 metres straight for $180,000 claimers and LAGUNA POINT who ran extremely well to be third to BULLET RAJ and PIZARRO in the $250,000 claiming group on September will be the hot favourite, The six-year-old mare, courtesy of apprentice Shavon Townsend’s 4kg claim, will carry the exact weight and will be hard to beat coming from the advantageous stands’ side draw.
