Equipped with an up-to-date method assessing glaucoma

-

THE EYES have often been referred to as the ‘window to the soul’, but what many people don’t know is that their eyes are windows to their general health. The eye is the only place on the body where actual blood vessels can be seen during clinical examination. The appearance of these blood vessels gives vital clues to the state of your general health, for example, presence of high blood pressure, diabetes, glaucoma and several other conditions.

Lee’s Optical Company Ltd is equipped with an up-todate method of assessing glaucoma – the Heidelburg Retina Tomograph II. The Heidelberg scanner is a painless method of evaluating patients for glaucoma and can detect cases three to four years earlier that the conventional methods of pressure and field measurements.

We advice that all persons who have or have been suspected of having, or have a family history of glaucoma, to have a scan done. The best protection from loss of vision due to glaucoma is regular thorough eye exams. Loss of vision from glaucoma is irreversible. The test is quick and painless and can be done even in children. Patients referred to us are assessed and returned to the referring doctor with a report.

HAVE A FREE VISION SCREENING DONE

How many of you go for annual eye checks? Vision screening is an efficient, practical and economical process to detect possible eye problems.

Good eyesight is critical to learning and development, as 80 per cent of learning involves the special sense of vision. It is often believed that children need to be able to read in order to have their eyesight checked. This is untrue, vision problems can often be corrected if detected early. The condition of a ‘lazy’ eye, known as amblyopia, may be prevented by early examination. All children should be examined for eye problems at birth, during infancy and before starting school. It is therefore important to have regular eye check-ups to ensure that good vision is maintained.

Poor eyesight can hinder learning and create frustrated children who are unlikely to reach their full potential due to an easily corrected problem. Signs to watch for include holding books or handheld toys very close to the face, standing close to the TV, squinting when viewing distant objects. Headaches may be due to an eye problem, but other causes may be ruled out. Additionally, parents who wear spectacles are more likely to have children who will also need vision correction, and the sooner the problem is diagnosed the better.

Some teenagers tend to be reluctant in acknowledging their loss of vision, as they do not want to wear glasses. However, easy-care, affordable contact lenses are available and are increasingly prescribed to teens.

VISION SCREENING

To detect conditions that may result in blindness. Eyes transfer 90 per cent of all information to the brain.

Impaired vision can cause learning, emotional and behavioural problems in children.

Children are often not aware of impairment. How many of you go for annual eye checks?

Vision screening is an efficient, practical and economical process to detect possible problems. What is vision screening? Some of the major aspects of vision screening are:

Visual acuity sharpness of the eye.

Binocular vision – both eyes working together.

Depth perception – distance of objects from one another in 3D.

Color perception – ability to differentiate colors.

Muscle balance – alignment of eyes in horizontal/vertical plane known as phoria.

Peripheral vision – ability to see from the ‘corner of the eye’.

WALL CHART

A wall chart only checks for acuity, what about other functions: I Color: obvious reasons.

I Depth: try pouring water in a glass with one eye closed. Muscle balance: possible visual fatigue.

Fusion: detect double vision.

WHAT IS A VISION SCREENER?

One instrument with a variety of screening tests.

Device with controlled test distance for far/near vision, hence precision and accuracy.

Can complete a comprehensive test in five minutes or less.

Many more tests and better control as compared to a wall chart.

After this process is completed, each person will be given recorded information to present to their eye care professional (optometrist, ophthalmologist).
