1972:progress report on the

of stage two of the Jamaica Transporta­tion Survey is received by Minister of Works Winston Jones from the consulting engineers for the project, Lamarre Valois Internatio­nal Limited. Jones is visiting the offices of the firm at 9A Hagley Park Road. The contract for carrying out the survey, which is partially financed by a loan from the Canadian Internatio­nal Developmen­t Agency, was signed by The Government in 1971. 1978:of Since the beginning

1978, at least 36 million pounds of flour needed to meet the needs of the country has just not been avail1able, a statement from the Private Sector Organisati­on of Jamaica (PSOJ) says. The PSOJ statement says neither the distributo­rs nor the commercial community could be blamed for any shortage. It says that between Jamaica Flour Mills and sole importers Jamaica Nutrition Holdings, they have been averaging a shortfall of 41,000 bags a month. The statement says that in the short run, sufficient foreign exchange has to be earned to get this basic food, and in, the long run, production of local food must be increased.

1992:Today marks the 500th anniversar­y of Columbus’ arrival on land in the Americas. Recognitio­n of this occasion will include the launching ceremony of St Ann’s National Heritage Week Activities at Columbus Park in Discovery Bay, St Ann. Heritage Week is being celebrated from October 11-19.. The theme for the activities marking this special anniversar­y year is ‘The Future From Our Past’.
