A salute to the heroes of out time

- Mickella Anderson/Features Writer

IT IS only fitting that on this day, National Heroes Day, we not only reflect on the outstanding contribution of the six men and one woman who paved the way for our great nation, but also look among us and celebrate the heroes of our time.

Since the passage of the National Honours and Awards Act by the Parliament of Jamaica in 1969, the National Honors and Awards is a platform to acknowledge the individuals who have made significant contributions to critical areas of national life, as well as inspired others to do so.

These awardees have given of themselves in long and faithful service to community and country, displayed great acts of bravery, or have made sterling contribution to the advancement of the welfare of our people. Today we salute them and say congratulations on being bestowed this honour!

STANDOUT MOMENTS

In this, The Gleaner’s Celebrating Excellence, let us pay tribute to some of these individuals. Learn about how the awards are structured and how you may nominate a candidate in future. While you’re at it, take a walk down memory lane with us and relive some of the standout moments from the awards over the years.

Though we highlight the work of others today, let us also seize the opportunity to look within ourselves and see where we can do more, be more, and give more. And remember, not all heroes wear a cape.
