CC wary of Charlemont threat

DR DEAN Weatherly, head coach of Cornwall College, said they will not be caught on the backfoot when they go up against Charlemont High School, who are labelled a surprise package in their first quarter-final match in the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup at the Bramwell Clarke Complex, today at 3 p.m.

Six other matches in the daCosta Cup will be in action across the island. The match between Glenmuir and Garvey Maceo is set for tomorrow at the Juici Patties Park.

“Yes, Charlemont is a surprise team. They have been working hard throughout the summer and from as far back as February, I’ve been told. However, this is the time of the year you have to put out your all. So yes we have to be cognisant of the fact that they are worthy opponents and not a walkover,” said Weatherly who noted that at this stage of the competition they will have to play their ‘A’ game every time. “Tomorrow we will probably make adjustments when the game starts to see how best we can stop them from scoring, and what can help us to score. This is because we don’t know much about Charlemont, so it will all come down to on the day,” he added.

CUTTING EDGE

Weatherly is aware that Charlemont are coming off a very competitive second-round fixture that will give them some sort of cutting edge for the quarter-finals, similar to what happened last season where they suffered defeat to Rusea’s in their first quarter-final match. He assured that they will not have a repeat of last season.

“The players are upbeat. Quite a few of them are used to being at this point in the competition, and what it takes. They know how we suffered last year when we lost to Rusea’s in the first game, especially in these rounds where you cannot lose your first game and expect to recover, it is kind of tight.

Everyone is ready and willing to give of their best and at this point, that is all we can ask for,” said Weatherly.

“Going into Charlemont’s backyard and playing against a team that hasn’t lost in home territory, we will definitely have to take the game to them.

And then we will see how much they can manage us from that standpoint...” he added.
