1959: Social and agricultural rehabilitation projects are viewed by Lord and Lady Hailes, on their five-hour tour through the Yallahs Valley area in the Blue Mountains of St Andrew. It is the most rugged trip the governor general and his wife are scheduled to take during their current 10-day visit and they express pleasure at being shown the difficult conditions under which small farmers live, and the work being done by Government to improve conditions. Lord Hailes tell lads at the Chestervale Youth Corps Camp to remember the individual districts and homes from which they came, and though they would not all return, some should at least put their knowledge at the disposal of the people from among whom they had come.

1959: A shipment of 2,000 tons of granulated sugar bought by the Sugar Manufacturers Association on the world market for consumption in Jamaica, is being unloaded in the port of Kingston. It is the second parcel of world sugar to have been bought for local consumption, and the shipment is the second in the history of the local industry to have been brought here from overseas. The shipment in 1959 became necessary when the West Indies Sugar Company’s plant at Monymusk finished with an output of sugar nearly 20,000 tons below the original estimates. The estimates were 70,000 tons and Monymusk finished with just around 51,000 tons. Monymusk is the sole sugar factory in Jamaica with refinery facilities. 1969:at An agreement is signed

the Ministry of Trade and Industry between the Colombian textile manufacturing company Compania Colombiana De Tejidos S.A. (Coltejer) and the Jamaican textile firm, Ariguanabo Company of Jamaica Limited. Under the agreement, Coltejer makes an investment of US$1.345 million (J$1.121 million) in Ariguanabo, on a joint participation basis. This investment, plus financing from other’ sources, will provide total new capital of J$2.5 million, which will be used to initiate an expansion programme to double Ariguanabo’s production over the next three years.
