ONE NEEDY family will receive a house in time for Christmas, courtesy of the Rotary Club of Kingston. The house to be delivered on Thursday, December 13, is the first of five to be built under its Home for The Homeless project. Food for the Poor will partner with the Club to build the houses.

Club President Linval Freeman presented a cheque for US$3,600 towards the cost of one house to Executive Director of Food for the Poor, David Mair yesterday at the Altamont Court Hotel. in New Kingston.

Freeman explained that the house recipients would be selected from the Food for the Poor list. He challenged club members to build on that success of last year’s housing initiative under which two families in the Corporate Area and one from St Catherine and St Elizabeth benefited.

“Our contribution is US$3,000 to each house. If we get the 67 active Rotarian members to each give $10,000 that can build another house and a half... so I am taking pledges,” he challenged club members.

Chairman of Food for the Poor, Andrew Mahfood thanked the Rotarians, reminding them that, “It is our collective responsibility to do all we can to help those that are in need”. He noted that it was by observing this mandate the charity organisation had been able, with the help of local and overseas partners over the past 36 years, to “renew and uplift the materially poor, in spirit”.
