Will robbers make us all cowards?

THE EDITOR, Sir:

ON TUESDAY, about 5:25 p.m. on November 14, 2018, I stood at the North Parade JUTC bus terminal in downtown Kingston among students, vendors and other commuters. Suddenly, there was an uproar. Shortly after, I realised that a middle-age man was robbed right then and there. He was defenceless and was trying to go about his business like everybody else standing in the terminal when hoodlums decided to rob him of a bag he was carrying.

The old man then came nearby where I was standing and asked a man, “Did you see two guys run past here with a black bag?” I was so upset about how the man responded: “Yow, move from ya suh nuh. Yah ask mi seh. Think man a informer. Ya come ask mi bout if people run pass yah.” This man who responded looked like he was in his mid40s.

Where is the community in all of this? Everybody stood there and watched as the old man got robbed and then took out their phones and videoed him as he wandered around looking for the reprobates who decided to take what was not rightfully theirs.

What is happening to our people? Why is it that everybody is afraid to speak out or to help someone who is being viciously attacked? Where is the unity?

Our policemen who decide that driving after taxis is more important than riding through areas prone to robbery and offering surveillance are also to blame
