Robinson earns top regional coaching award

JULIAN ROBINSON, who is responsibl­e for the world’s best male discus thrower in 2018, is North America, Central America, and the Caribbean Track and Field Coaches Associatio­n (NACACTFCA) Coach of the Year.

Robinson, who over the last 10 years, has brought Jamaica and by extension, regional throwing to a new level, helped Fedrick Dacres to multiple titles and world number one status in 2018.

Dacres began the year by winning the Commonweal­th Games title, later adding the NACAC accolade before beating the world to claim the Diamond League and Continenta­l crowns. Dacres is also NACAC’s Male Athlete of the Year.

SMIKLE IN THE MIX

Traves Smikle, another athlete coached by Robinson, was also in the mix. He took silver at both Commonweal­th Games and NACAC Senior Championsh­ips. He was also the bronze medal winner at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games.

At the Junior level, Robinson is also responsibl­e for the gold medal success of Kai Chang, who won the World Under-20 discus title. Zackery Dillon, CARIFTA Games Under-17 shot put and discus titles, added to Robinson’s 2018 achievemen­ts.

“I am honoured and humbled,” Robinson replied when asked to comment on being named NACAC Coach of the Year.

“It says a lot about the advancemen­t of the throws in Jamaica and NACAC region,” Robinson added.
