Pierrce Plummer creating his future

- Vanessa James/Gleaner Writer

PIERRCE PLUMMER, like many, enrolled at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in 2011 with the hopes of completing his degree and becoming gainfully employed. However, seven years later, he is just in his final year of study.

Plummer was accepted to study painting, but two years later, switched his major to photography because it was more marketable. “I was looking for work one summer and even though I had my portfolio, nobody would hire me. So I asked a couple people why they think I wasn’t being accepted and they hinted that painting wasn’t very marketable, so I made the switch to photography,” Plummer explains.

College was not the initial plan for Plummer, but because of his passion for art, along with his parents’ influence, he enrolled. Plummer states, “I was on the final lap to joining the police force. Everything was ready for me to start training, but my father said that I should do something else, go to a school, pursue teaching, or something, so I chose Edna.”

However, challenges have kept Plummer from completing his programme in the allotted four years, some of which include financial problems and depression. “No matter how bad it got, I couldn’t stop. I kept trying, even if I failed. Plus, my mother is always supporting me to go on. She encourages my passion and I am grateful for that.”

Plummer said he is proud to be in his final year. “I have to finish, and I will. My mother went to dental school but had to stop because of the lack of finances, and when I complete my programme at Edna, I will be the first male on my mother’s side to graduate from college.”

In order to make money to assist with his needs, Plummer does portraits, tattooing, and some painting. However, when times are slow, as it tends to be for an artist, he depends on his parents. Completing college is one of the greatest accomplishments that one can achieve, and this is the same for Plummer. Art is his passion and examples of this can be seen in some of his work posted on his Instagram page (dxpamine.inc).
