Political cronyism wrecking schools

-

THE EDITOR, Sir: WHEN WILL the corruption end? Every sector we can think of is plagued by the corruption of putting people in leadership positions by means of cronyism. Dr Wykeham McNeill addressed the issue of the human resource manager at Petrojam and the flaws that occurred in the process by which she was employed.

This issue is very prevalent in the education sector. Pretty much like the HR manager, many principals who are being installed in our schools are not qualified or competent for the position. These flawed methods of political involvement in the selection of principals, viceprincipals, and others have been running our schools to a wreck.

Many of these principals who got their position through politics are often not driven by a vision to see our education sector thrive, nor do they have our youth at heart. These people are, rather, driven by power, greed, money, and selfishness. They operate by nepotism and favouritism. There is often a great absence of fairness, professionalism, and an inability to communicate effectively.

The people who have served well have the qualifications, the experience, and the genuine desire and heart to serve our nation, and children are often put on the back burner. Sometimes they are even sabotaged for speaking or acting right.

It is a waste of resources when the ministry sets up committees and hires persons to make policies and guidelines that are not adhered to.

I pray the day will come when we will exercise good values and attitudes for the development of our nation.
