CREDIT UNIONS are not-for-profit financial institutions, and in order to offer better rates and services, members volunteer their time, skills, and expertise for the effective functioning of the organisation.

Annually, volunteers who serve the Jamaican credit union movement donate their skills and expertise to the monetary value of approximately $164 million.

Co-operatives around the world operate according to the same core principles and values, and credit unions, as co-operative financial institutions, are no different.

Credit unions are different from other financial institutions in many important ways – from the benefits of membership to who actually owns the institution! One very important difference is that credit unions rely on volunteers from among the credit union’s members to form the board of directors and supervisory, credit and other subcommittees.

CREDIT UNION VOLUNTEERS

The board of directors, elected by the members, governs a credit union. The supervisory committee is responsible for ensuring that the credit union’s board of directors and management establish practices and procedures to properly safeguard members’ savings. The credit committee’s duties and responsibilities include adjudication of members’ requests for loans. There are also several subcommittees appointed by the board of directors within each credit union. These members are also volunteers.
