-

SALES OF My Political Journey, the first book to be published by former Prime Minister P.J. Patterson, will benefit The University of the West Indies (UWI).

Scheduled to hit local book stores this month, the book is Patterson’s account of the period from the mid-1950s to the early 2000s preceding and following his service as Jamaica’s sixth prime minister.

Ahead of the release, Dr Luz Longsworth, pro-vice-chancellor and principal of UWI Open Campus and chairman of UWI Press – publishers of the book, thanked Patterson for “entrusting the UWI Press with this important and historic book” and for his continued contributions to The UWI, this year celebrating its 70th anniversary. UWI Press is a non-for-profit scholarly publisher of books in 14 academic disciplines.

“Mr Patterson has committed the total proceeds of the sale of the book to The UWI P.J. Patterson Endowment Fund, established in April 2018, with his contribution of US$100,000,” Longsworth said.

“The fund will assist in the payment of tuition and hall fees for needy students and the interchange among students to and from the Mona campus to other campuses for specific periods, thus promoting regional integration.”

Pointing to Patterson’s additional donation of a scholarship to support the annual cost of tuition and other expenses associated with a first year of an undergraduate degree at The UWI and his support of the annual UWI Global Giving Week, Longsworth said, “We are truly grateful for alumni like the former prime minister, as we work to maintain The UWI’s standard as the premier tertiary institution for the benefit of the Caribbean.”
