UWI back at the top of intercol football

THE UNIVERSITY of West Indies (UWI) are back at the top of men’s intercollegiate football. Last Saturday, they defeated defending champions G.C. Foster College 3-1 at the Harbour View Mini Stadium to win the Division One title and complete the intercollegiate double. The Andrew Peart-coached team had captured the Greg Garrel KO on December 8 after stopping first-time finalists Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) 2-1.

Following a 2-0 win over Shortwood in the semi-finals, it was a very confident UWI who went into the final.

With several of their players competing in the Red Stripe Premier League, UWI showed their class to walk away with an easy win.

Shakes, Anthony Greenland, and Javoy Belnavis were the scorers for the winners. Ashanti Mullings got the consolation goal for CMU.

Head coach Peart hailed the UWI’s win, which broke a seven-year drought.

“It is a good achievement for the university as it puts the football programme in good stead. It also gives the players opportunities for scholarships,” said Peart. In a curtain-raiser to the feature match, new kids on the block Trench Town Polytechnic squeezed out a 3-2 win over Bethlehem Moravian College to take home the Division Two title. Former Jamaica College player Rafique Bryan scored all three goals for the victors while Anthony Morris and Javaughn Russell scored for Bethlehem. Both Trench Town and Bethlehem have been promoted to next year’s Division One competition.
