Bigger, better motocross season for 2019 – Reynolds
AFTER AN exciting and successful staging of the third and final leg of the inaugural Motocross Summer Series, held on December 16 at DaCosta Farms in St Catherine, organiser and overall open champion, Kyle Reynolds has promised a more active 2019 season.
Reynolds, the chairman of MX Jamaica, said he was shocked by the amount of interest shown in the series, and vowed that there will be more meets to accommodate the growing attraction to the sport.
“The sport is alive again, and people are very interested in getting involved. It (motocross racing) seems to come in waves in Jamaica. A decade ago, we had riding, then it disappeared for some years and then came back again. But we have a big wave of riding this time, and 2019 is going to be a good year,” he said
“We plan to have a race meet every other month. That is six races for the year instead of the three we have now,” he noted.
This year’s initial staging of the Motocross Summer Series was to be held over the summer months of June, July and August, but rain pushed back the final meet before some participants who were in school delayed it again. The impact of the summer series has been huge, and sponsors are already lining up to come on board.
“People are calling out of the blue, which is shocking, to offer sponsorship and support. So it has definitely sparked an interest and it’s well needed, especially, for the young kids. A lot of young kids had their bikes but didn’t have a place to ride or an organisation that was organising races.
“Now, people have been sending messages on Facebook and Instagram asking how they can get involved and how they can come and race, so it’s definitely looking good for us,” Reynolds added.
The first race meet of the year will be held on the first weekend in February, and Reynolds expects a big field of riders.
“We are looking to see lots of people and new faces riding, so we are definitely looking to continue the wave into 2019,” he said.
In the last competition, Lucas Thompson took first place in the 50cc class, with Alexander Handal second and Lukah Walton third. Craig Powell Jr was the series champion in that class. Handal was also the series champion for the 65cc class, which did not have enough competitors on the day, so that race was mixed with the 50cc class.
