Evince – Six men on a mission for God.
“My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you. Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favour and good success in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding ...” Proverbs 3:1.
THEY MET at Northern Caribbean University (NCU) where they all studied, and though most of them had a similar course of study, they had one greater interest: music.
Aaron Cummings (1st tenor) from St Catherine; Brendon Coleman (2nd tenor) from Manchester; Albert Walker (3rd tenor) from St Andrew; Oren Thomas (4th tenor) from St Andrew; Craig Campbell (baritone) from Portland; and Winston (bass) from St James – through their love for music and ministering through music, eventually moved to form the group Evince.
“We all knew each other and had an individual love for groups like Take 6, that have mastered the jazz/a cappella style of singing, but we had never heard a group that sang six-part harmonies in Jamaica. The group officially began in 2016, after we decided to come together to form a group that could take on the challenge to perform this style of music,” Campbell explained.
Evince, which is an English verb that means ‘to show or express clearly or to make plain’, defines clearly what the group’s mandate is.
“As a group, our sole aim is to spread the gospel of Jesus in the clearest way possible, and we have chosen the medium of music to do so. The inspiration for the name Evince came through Winston who, at the time, was throwing out different suggestions. Evince was chosen by the other group members unanimously because we not only strive to evince Jesus through singing, but even with our very lives,” Coleman added.
Having done several performances at churches, concerts, and King’s House, among other venues; a few in-house recordings of original arrangements; radio jingles; interviews; radio and TV performances, Coleman expressed that they don’t measure their success by the stages they have been on, but by the fact that they can bless at least one person through their ministry and making the good news of Jesus known.
“In the next few years, we see the name Evince as an international brand – a household name for good music as we are aiming to become one of the best Christian a cappella groups in the world.
