THIS DAY IN OUR PAST
The following events took place on January 8 in the years identified:
1959:Ltd Nathan and Company
of King Street Kingston, is acquired by a combine comprising E. A. Issa and Bros, John Pringle and Donald DeLisser for a sum undisclosed but known to be “over a quarter of a million pounds”. The sale is completed after weeks of negotiations in which the syndicate is reported to have outbid the commercial firm of R. Hanna and Sons for the family-controlled business which is situated on what is considered the most valuable commercial site in downtown Kingston.
The Water Com1959:mission
unanimously passes a resolution seeking higher rates. If the resolution is approved by the Government, the new rates of 1/- to 1/6d per thousand gallons of water over the old will go into operation on April 1. The reason for the increase, states that additional money is needed to balance the Commission’s budget. Figures given in the resolution show that the increase will provide about an extra £150,000 of revenue each year. 1991:buses The two new school
which are provided by the Jamaica Railway Corporation to the Government of Jamaica on January 6 are in full flight after partially working for the first day on January 7. In fact, the manner in which they work see most students, except those attending tertiary institutions, using them. Howard Russell, a student at Our Lady of the Angels Prep, tells The
Gleaner that the Jamaica Railway Corporation could not have come up with a better idea. Both buses start working from 5:30 in the mornings, Mondays to Fridays, then breaks at 10 a.m.; they restart at 1:00 p.m. through to 6 p. m.
