The following events took place on January 9 in the years identified: 1945:Jamaica The new legislature of

under the 1944 Constitution is opened by Governor John Huggins. Oliver Stanley, secretary of state for the colonies, the first holder of that post to visit Jamaica while in office, witnesses the opening. It was Colonel Stanley who conducted the negotiation of the new Constitution on behalf of the British government. 1946:former Christopher Swaby,

conservator of forests, who was recently promoted to British Guiana on a similar, but more responsible post, leaves the island by British West Indies Airways plane for Trinidad to attend the Forestry Conference arranged by the Anglo-American Caribbean Commission, which takes place in British Guiana from January 14 to 23. It is likely that he will go on to his new post at the conclusion of the conference. 1967:establishes The Ministry of Labour a labourrecruiting centre in Mandeville and is to establish others in May Pen, Black River and Junction in St Elizabeth. Establishment of the Mandeville centre follows a study by the ministry in 1966 of plans to expand the services of the Government Employment Bureau because of the great upsurge over the past year in the use of the bureau by employers in every field. The Black River and Junction centres will serve primarily the needs of the projected alumina plant to be established in St Elizabeth by a consortium of three American bauxite companies.
