THIS DAY IN OUR PAST
The following events took place on January 11 in the years identified:
1964:John Director of Tourism Pringle’s first Jamaica Jamboree Golf Tournament, which ends at the Half Moon Rose Hall golf course, proves a resounding success. Our reporter on the spot phoned in to say that the American and Canadian visitors, who formed the bulk of 19 teams taking part, were enthusiastic in their praises of the Jamaican courses, the Jamaican climate and conditions, and most of them and their wives declare their intention of returning in 1965.
1970:A ten-man team from the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), of which Jamaica recently becomes a member, arrives at the Palisadoes Airport over the weekend, the majority arriving today by Eastern Airlines from Washington. The group will hold discussions with Jamaican officials on implementation of three projects planned when Mr Felipe Herrera, the president of the IDB, was in the island on a recent visit. The projects concern a loan scheme for small farmers, a student loan scheme to enable more students to pursue higher education and a global or multisector loan to the Jamaica Development Bank to be used in a number of areas.
1983:Jamaica’s import budget for 1983 is set at US $1502 million, a total of US $57 million above the estimated figure of US $1445-million for 1982, Prime Minister Edward Seaga discloses. Of the total 1983 import budget, raw materials and capital goods are allocated US$860 million, some US$581m more than the existing amount of US $779 million for 1982.
1982.The allocation for the importation of consumer goods is reduced by US$l2million, bringing the total imports for this group in 1983 to US $200 million. There has been a marginal reduction in the allocation for fuel and bauxite imports in 1983 over 1982.
