1954: The formal opening

recently of the elementary school at Claverty Cottage, Portland, is attended by a large gathering of parents and guardians of pupils. The building is also dedicated for use as a mission station by E. L. Evans, who deputised for Basil Montague Dale.

1954: During the Christmas 1953, the students of a number of secondary and private schools contribute­d their pennies towards recreation for the children at Maxfleld Park Home. This scheme of contributi­ng pennies is launched by the Maxfield Park Recreation Committee, of which Beryl Desnoes is chairman.

1961:The Air Transport Authority finishes its hearing of applicatio­ns by four airlines to operate two-way services between Jamaica and London. Representa­tives of Falcon Airways did not attend the closing session of the public inquiry at South Camp Hotel. 1983:Edward Prime Minister

Seaga, in his capacity as minister of energy, says that 25 of the island’s 33 watershed areas are being gazetted so that work can begin in these areas where hillsides are being rapidly devegetate­d, and as a result experienci­ng soil erosion and severe water loss.

1992: The purchasing of the Jamaican dollar takes its most severe battering in the 23 years of the currency’s history. In 1991, inflation rose by 80.2 per cent and its value tumbled from US12.3 cents to US4.5 cents.
