Myers, Fletcher & Gordon celebrates 75 years
THREE-QUARTERS OF a century in the life of any business is no small feat, and Myers, Fletcher & Gordon (MF&G) has played a key role in setting standards in the legal profession in that time, its partners are suggesting.
The assertion came yesterday as legal luminaries and partners, consultants, and support staff, as well as alumni of MF&G, filed into the pristine University Chapel at The University of the West Indies, Mona, for a service of thanksgiving to commemorate the 75th anniversary of MF&G.
The largest law firm in Jamaica and one of the largest in the Caribbean, the firm is renowned for its rich history and success, and according to managing partner, Peter Goldson, the founding partners set the bar high where integrity, client service, and public service are concerned.
“Within the firm, and also for those attorneys who have left the firm and joined other firms, the lessons they have learned at MF&G have been with them throughout their practice, and those were standards laid out by the founders, who were amazing men,” Goldson
shared with The Gleaner.
Regular meetings and shared responsibilities within the firm were also touted as distinguishing features of MF&G.
“We manage the firm through various committees, and that has the advantage of not putting all the load on one person, but getting all the attorneys involved. We also believe that we have set an example for the profession as it relates to attention to detail. When our lawyers go to court, the judges know that there will be a written brief that will be well prepared and that they can trust the word of the lawyers representing MF&G,” added Goldson, asserting that there are bright prospects for the future.
Senior partner Sandra MinottPhillips, QC, was of a similar mind, declaring that the founding partners got it right in 1944 and that a winning formula has served them well throughout the decades.
“Behind the name ‘MF&G’ is 75 years of work given by countless people,” said Phillips.
“We strive to deliver the highest quality work, quickly and courteously, and I think we have
refined that. We try to make every piece of work we do better than the piece we did before, and if you do that over the course of 75 years, you must end up with excellence. In addition to being lawyers, we’re very patriotic, and we try to take Jamaica forward in whatever way we can in the hope that we’ll be building a better Jamaica, not just a better law firm,” she stressed.
Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn was among those in attendance, and the senior member of the law fraternity contended that MF&G was synonymous with a high calibre of professionalism and service.
“That will always be an attractive beacon to members of the profession who need to be reminded that where this noble profession is concerned, high levels of professionalism includes at all times the maintenance of high standards in terms of your conduct, your deportment, your integrity, your work ethic, and, of course, the total package that is the attorney,” she argued.
