Cameron wants complete JCA overhaul
FORMER CRICKET West Indies (CWI) president, Whycliffe ‘Dave’ Cameron, says he is surprised there is no complete overhaul of the Jamaica Cricket Association in the last election as its team has been underperforming regionally.
Jamaica finished fifth in the recently concluded CWI Professional Cricket League Regional Four Day tournament and has failed to win the competition since the 2011-12 season. They have also failed to capture a title for the One-Day format since 2012.
But Wilford ‘Billy’ Heaven was re-elected as president of Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) last month for a third two-year term.
“I am embarrassed by the performance of the Jamaica senior teams and I am alarmed that the association returned almost all the executives to run Jamaica’s cricket again,” Cameron said before the Cricket West Indies presidential election on Sunday.
“I am still the president of Kensington Cricket Club and I have not been engaged to see how we can turn around the cricket here. I am very concern about Jamaica’s cricket. How do we fix it? I am not sure.”
Cameron needed the support of his home country’s association to win a fourth term as Cricket West Indies president at the election.
But the two votes from the JCA went to Ricky Skerritt of St Kitts and Nevis.
Cameron ascended to the top of regional cricket on the recommendation of his home association in 2013, but the marriage between the two had broken down. And although he made a presentation to the board of the JCA, he knew it would be difficult to sway the minds of Heaven and others.
Cameron agrees that Jamaica should lead the way in terms of producing cricketers for the regional teams, because of the size of the population.
“Cricket West Indies is developing a cricket scorecard and that will determine the level of funding that an association gets,” he said.
