An attack on decency

THE EDITOR, Sir: THE EMERGENCE of certain videos on social media and reports elsewhere show that there is an orchestrated attack by rogue taxi and minibus drivers on members of our police force in carrying out their duties.

This situation is extremely disturbing to me – and should be to all well-thinking Jamaicans – as this goes to the very heart of our claim to be a civilised society, and how we function within that space.

Our police force is the linchpin in protecting our right to life, liberty, and justice – all tenets that are guaranteed under our Constitution. When they are attacked by a band of lawless marauders, posing as operators in the public transportation sector, they should be allowed every right and the necessary equipment to protect themselves. Because, in these situations, use of a baton or deadly force such as their firearms may not be the answer. The police should be equipped at all times with good mob/crowd control devices such tear gas, rubber bullets and protective shields to ensure that they are able to carry out their duties effectively at all times.

The above measures, we hope, will only be temporary while the Government and the country collectively figure out how we begin to tackle the monster of indiscipline and violence that is slowly choking us to death.

We should embark on a mindset change initiative where we reverse the brainwashed concepts of indiscipline demonstrated by so many, with positive reinforcement of discipline and decency.

Dogs will certainly nyam our supper if we can’t find ways to deal with this situation. WINSTON BARRETT Manor Park
