Ferguson takes charge at JC

- – L.S.

JAMAICA COLLEGE has parted ways with coach Andrew Peart with principal Wayne Robinson yesterday confirming that Davian Ferguson has been appointed as the school’s new technical director for their football programme.

Robinson underlined that he believes that Ferguson fits the bill and pointed to Peart’s commitments with Red Stripe Premier League outfit UWI FC as a factor behind their decision to move in a different direction.

“We have moved on to a new coach (at Jamaica College), and that coach is Davian Ferguson, who started his tenure (Tuesday) yesterday as the school’s technical director,” Robinson said. “We look for persons with attributes that fit into the school’s programme, and Mr Ferguson represents that.”

“We look for humility and persons who can manage boys and develop them as human beings and, of course, their technical ability, so we looked for someone who would fit the programme at Jamaica College ... and we think he has these attributes, and we will work with him to see how best we can do,” added Robinson.

After winning five straight Manning Cup and Olivier Shield titles under former head coach Miguel Coley, JC last season failed to lift a title for the first time since 2012 under the guidance of Peart, a former assistant coach to Coley.

Robinson notes that the institution remains ambitious but believes Ferguson will be supported and prepared for the expectations.

“Jamaica College always has high expectations, especially for football, but, generally, with sports and academics. So our expectation is to perform at our best, and we will give Mr Ferguson and all our coaches here full support to perform at their best. Mr Ferguson is aware of the nature of the school that he is coming to, that there is always going to be pressure. But we think he is equipped and we are confident that

he will do a very good job,” said Robinson, who went on to explain that they decided to part ways with Peart because of his divided interests.

“The school’s football programme requires undivided focused attention, and the school believes Peart’s involvement with UWI did not allow him to do that. We really spoke about the work burden and expectation he has at Jamaica College while coaching UWI at the same time, so both of us looked at it and decided he had to choose one going into the next season, and he chose UWI,” Robinson said.

Ferguson has been part of the national coaching set-up, having worked with several units and has also coached at Hydel, Frome Technical, and St Jago High.
