‘Talk of the town’

- DR DONNA BRAHAM Co-chair, UDOP Conference Organising Committee

WELCOME, AGAIN, to another University Diabetes

Outreach Programme (UDOP)

Conference. Our silver anniversary ushers in renewed interest in heart disease and diabetes and seeks to update modern approaches to the management of that dynamic duo. Our conference programme has embraced both mainline and controversial topics that take us to the ‘heart’ of the matter, inclusive of influences from obesity, nutrition and physical activity.

We have presentations on some new oral hypoglycaemics, which are the ‘talk of the town’, especially since the declare study has been reported, and also data on our own experiences with bariatric surgery here in Jamaica. The cardiorenal axis is being reviewed, the impact of the environment on our genetic expressions will be explored, and there are powerhouses coming all the way from India to discuss best practices that they have used to contain chronic diseases.

As was the case last year, there will be special opportunity to have a one-on-one with the experts. There will also be case presentations. And, as a prelude to the conference, we’ll be walking and running for diabetes at Emancipation Park, Kingston, early Saturday morning, April 13. We invite you to stay updated via the Diabetes Association and UDOP websites Twitter and their Instagram pages.

A peek into next year reveals that ‘Diabetes and the Immune System’ will be in focus.

See you all at the conference!
