Dr William Foster presents Sir Philip Sherlock Lecture; earns award

NOTED JAMAICAN cardiologi­st, Dr William Foster, CD, has accepted the request of the University Diabetes Outreach Programme (UDOP) to deliver the 2019 Sir Philip Sherlock Distinguis­hed Lecture at the 25th Annual Internatio­nal Diabetes Conference scheduled to take place at the Jewel Resort, St Ann’s Bay, between Thursday, April 25 and Saturday, April 27. Dr Foster will deliver his lecture on Friday, April 26 at 11 a.m.

His topic is: Diabetes management, parallelin­g national developmen­t.

Dr Foster will also receive the

distinguis­hed award named for Sir Philip Sherlock, a former vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies. Sir Philip was passionate about Caribbean history and culture, and their importance to national developmen­t. He believed in the innate potential of the people of the region to chart their own course, given the opportunit­ies.

He is being awarded for ‘years of selfless service to and support of persons in need of cardiovasc­ular interventi­on’.

Dr Foster mirrors many of the values upheld by Sir Philip Sherlock. A humanitari­an par excellence, he has sent over 750 unfunded Jamaicans overseas in need of heart surgery, but who were unable to afford it.

The Sir Philip Sherlock awardee received his tertiary education at the Howard University, United States, where he earned a BSc in 1963 and an MD in 1967.

He served as Chief Resident of Internal Medicine at New England Deaconess Hospital (1970s). He was Consultant Cardiologi­st at the University Hospital of the West Indies (1982-2017). He went into private practice in Jamaica 1972 (to present).

He has membership in several profession­al societies, including Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society (1963). He is a Fellow, Cardiology, New England Deaconess, and Fellow Cardiology, Howard University. AWARDS

Dr Foster is the recipient of a number of prestigiou­s honours and awards. He received a Jamaican National Award, the Order of Distinctio­n, Commander Class, in 2006 . In 1962, he earned one from the Beta Kappa Chi Honor Society, Howard University, and was named Intern of the Year by Howard University in 1968).

He has authored two books and is preparing a third on poetry.
