SVL fêtes children in state care
OVER 150 children enjoyed hours of fun, food, and frolic on the grounds of Caymanas Park when the Supreme Ventures Foundation recently staged the seventh annual Easter Egg Hunt for children in state care.
The Easter Egg Hunt was created to give the children from state-run homes a much-needed change of pace and outdoor experiences.
This year’s event, hosted by TerriKarelle Reid, saw six homes from St Andrew and St Catherine vying for glory in an ‘egg-tastic’ sports day.
Children from Maxfield Park, City of Refuge, SOS Children’s Village in Stony Hill, Reddie’s Place of Safety, Homestead Place of Safety, and Strathmore Children’s Home, were divided into three houses – Cocomint, Blue Bunny, and Marshmallow. They competed in bunny-hop races, sack races, eggand-spoon and flat races.
Staff volunteers from Supreme Ventures, captained the houses and also joined in the fun with the bun-and-cheese relay, which
involved children racing slices of bun to the adult volunteers from their house, who would then have to eat the bun as fast as possible, before completing the last leg of the relay.
In keeping with the tradition of the event, the children and adults also searched the fair grounds for coloured eggs in a five-minute Easter-egg dash.
The guests, who ranged from age three to 18, were treated to fun, kid-friendly favourites, hamburgers, hot dogs, cotton candy, popcorn, fritters, and an assortment of candies from local creamery Candy Craze. They also left with a paper goody bag, buns from Young Sang Bakery, cheeseand candy-filled eggs.
Gail Abrahams, vice-president of marketing, communications and sponsorships at Supreme Ventures Limited, said that the treat solidifies the group’s focus on children in state care.
“Our foundation’s primary focus is the welfare of children in state care, and this flagship event reinforces that. Our Easter Egg Hunt focuses on the children’s need for fun and the simplicity of childhood; some of these children have been through so much and it’s important to give them an opportunity to enjoy the holidays,” she said.
