Taiyuan University of Technology
TAIYUAN UNIVERSITY of Technology (TYUT), founded in 1902 as the Western Learning School of the National Shanxi Grand Academy, is one of the three earliest-founded national universities in China. It has been known as Engineering School of Shanxi University and Engineering College of Shanxi University. It became independent in 1953 and was named Taiyuan College of Engineering, directly under the Ministry of Higher Education. In 1962, it became a provincial university, and changed its name to Taiyuan Polytechnic University in 1984. In 1997, it was incorporated with the Shanxi Mining College, founded in 1958, and directly subordinated to the Ministry of Coal Industry of China, and changed its name to Taiyuan University of Technology. In the same year, it was selected to participate in the ‘211 Program’, China’s higher-education expansion programme for the country’s top 100 universities. In 2013, TYUT became a university qualified to recruit overseas students on Chinese government scholarships. In 2017, TYUTwas officially enlisted as a world-class discipline-building university of the Ministry of Education (MOE) of China
At present, TYUT occupies an area of two km2, with the public building area of 1.49million m2. There are over 30,800 fulltime undergraduates, about 7,000 graduates and postgraduates, and 485 international students. There are 84 undergraduate programmes, 123 master stations, 51 doctor stations and 13 post-doctoraal research centres. In addition, TYUT has three national level key disciplines, four national-level model centers of experiment education, five national-level promotion programmes of special disciplines, and seven National Centres for Engineering Practice and Education. The disciplines of mechanical design, manufacturing and its automation, and materials shaping and control engineering have for the first time entered the national five-star undergraduate disciplines, according to the 2016 Disciplines and Majors Evaluation Report on Chinese Universities. In addition, TYUT’s engineering, material science and chemical science disciplines rank among ESI’s global top one per cent. Currently, there are 3,480 faculty members, among which 2,157 are professional teachers, 1,236 teachers with senior professional technical titles, 238 doctoral supervisors and three academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering.
TYUT, with its global vision, has been dedicating itself to the internationalisation of higher education, and enhancing its international exchanges and cooperation. It has established collaborative relationships with 132 overseas universities and institutions, and conducted joint educational programmes of undergraduates and graduates with over 10 universities beyond the border.
