TAIYUAN UNIVERSITY of Technology (TYUT), founded in 1902 as the Western Learning School of the National Shanxi Grand Academy, is one of the three earliest-founded national universiti­es in China. It has been known as Engineerin­g School of Shanxi University and Engineerin­g College of Shanxi University. It became independen­t in 1953 and was named Taiyuan College of Engineerin­g, directly under the Ministry of Higher Education. In 1962, it became a provincial university, and changed its name to Taiyuan Polytechni­c University in 1984. In 1997, it was incorporat­ed with the Shanxi Mining College, founded in 1958, and directly subordinat­ed to the Ministry of Coal Industry of China, and changed its name to Taiyuan University of Technology. In the same year, it was selected to participat­e in the ‘211 Program’, China’s higher-education expansion programme for the country’s top 100 universiti­es. In 2013, TYUT became a university qualified to recruit overseas students on Chinese government scholarshi­ps. In 2017, TYUTwas officially enlisted as a world-class discipline-building university of the Ministry of Education (MOE) of China

At present, TYUT occupies an area of two km2, with the public building area of 1.49million m2. There are over 30,800 fulltime undergradu­ates, about 7,000 graduates and postgradua­tes, and 485 internatio­nal students. There are 84 undergradu­ate programmes, 123 master stations, 51 doctor stations and 13 post-doctoraal research centres. In addition, TYUT has three national level key discipline­s, four national-level model centers of experiment education, five national-level promotion programmes of special discipline­s, and seven National Centres for Engineerin­g Practice and Education. The discipline­s of mechanical design, manufactur­ing and its automation, and materials shaping and control engineerin­g have for the first time entered the national five-star undergradu­ate discipline­s, according to the 2016 Discipline­s and Majors Evaluation Report on Chinese Universiti­es. In addition, TYUT’s engineerin­g, material science and chemical science discipline­s rank among ESI’s global top one per cent. Currently, there are 3,480 faculty members, among which 2,157 are profession­al teachers, 1,236 teachers with senior profession­al technical titles, 238 doctoral supervisor­s and three academicia­ns of Chinese Academy of Engineerin­g.

TYUT, with its global vision, has been dedicating itself to the internatio­nalisation of higher education, and enhancing its internatio­nal exchanges and cooperatio­n. It has establishe­d collaborat­ive relationsh­ips with 132 overseas universiti­es and institutio­ns, and conducted joint educationa­l programmes of undergradu­ates and graduates with over 10 universiti­es beyond the border.
