China celebrates 70th

OCTOBER 1 is the anniversar­y of the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, and is celebrated as a national holiday all over China.

On this day back in 1949, the Chinese people, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, declared victory in the War of Liberation and a grand ceremony was held at Tian’anmen Square. At the ceremony, Mao Zedong, chairman of the Central People’s Government, solemnly declared the founding of the People’s Republic of China, and raised the first national flag of China. Three hundred thousand soldiers and people gathered at the square for the grand parade and celebratio­n procession.

NATIONAL DAY FLOWER BED

The National Day Flower Bed festival is found in the main squares of many cities during the National Day. The Flower Bed in Tian’anmen Square is, of course, the grandest and most beautiful. This year, stretching 50 metres in diameter and three metres high, the flower arrangemen­ts in Tian’anmen Square are supposed to signify the country’s prosperity and peace. Hundreds of thousands of flower pots have been carefully arranged to wow tourists and residents and to fill Beijing with festive ambiance.

HANGING RED CHINESE LANTERNS

During the National Day, red lanterns are seen everywhere, especially hanging at the gates of government office buildings as well as at stores and shops. The red lantern is a symbol of festivity, luck and happiness.

NATIONAL DAY FIREWORKS

Fireworks displays are usually held nationwide in all cities during the National Day.

GOLDEN WEEK

In recent years, the Chinese government extended the National Day holiday to one week, which was called the Golden Week. It is intended to help expand the domestic tourism
